How do I start the process?
For most of our clients, this is the first time they have arranged a burial at sea. Simply call us at 732-801-7472, and we will guide you through the entire process and take care of all the details.
Do I need to attend the scattering?
No. You may deliver the cremated remains to our office in person or send them through the U.S. Postal Service. We will respectfully scatter the ashes in compliance with all EPA (federal) and DEP (state) regulations.
How long does the trip take?
From the time we leave the dock until we return is generally no longer than 90 minutes. This provides ample time for the scattering ceremony and allows family and friends an opportunity to reflect and pay their respects.
Do I need a permit to scatter ashes in the ocean?
No. A permit is not required for an ocean scattering. However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that all sea burials be reported within 30 days. Burial At Sea Services will complete and file all required EPA documentation on your behalf.
Do I need to place the ashes in an urn?
No. The ashes may be scattered directly from the receptacle provided by the crematory. If you prefer, you may purchase a biodegradable urn and place it into the water with the ashes inside. Many families choose this option, but it is entirely a personal preference.
Can we conduct a religious ceremony?
Yes. Many families invite a member of the clergy or another officiant to accompany them and conduct a religious or personal ceremony during the service.
How much notice do you need to schedule a service?
We can often accommodate families with as little as one day's notice. However, all reservations are subject to availability. We recommend contacting us as early as possible to secure your preferred date and time.
Can we bring food and beverages aboard?
Yes. You are welcome to bring food, snacks, and beverages of your choice. Alcoholic beverages are permitted for guests 21 years of age or older.
Will I receive documentation of the interment?
Yes. After the service, we will mail you a signed and sealed Certificate of Interment containing the date, time, and GPS coordinates of the scattering location. We will also provide you with a copy of the EPA report that we file on your behalf.
